Auger Design
& Materials

HAVE A DESIGN IN MIND?

At Augers UK, our investment in the latest 3D CAD (computer-aided design) technology has allowed us to develop and produce auger screws quickly and efficiently, alongside maximising quality, reliability, and repeatability. Our customer base boasts some of the largest multinational corporations worldwide as our end-users, and we are confident that our experience and knowledge can help with your application.

Our engineers have a wealth of experience developing bulk solids solutions and have been designing auger screws for over two decades. From one-off designs to a series in different diameters, Augers UK can design and manufacture your auger screws from the initial concept to the fully finished product. Variations in flights can be produced, such as twin or triple starts, with relative ease using our programmed machine tool approach. Such methods can be very cost-effective and cannot be matched using traditional fabrication techniques.

Trantec, our parent company, has manufactured Powder SamplersFlexible Screw Conveyors, and Metering Feeders systems, including gravimetricvolumetric, and Micro screw feeders, for various processing manufacturers and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) since 1997. Through our experience and vigorous testing, we have learnt which augers perform best with different bulk solids. The relationship between rotational speed, the diameter of flights, flight pitch, and the central core size can be critical. Flow rates can be calculated, but these calculations tend to give only approximations and can’t consider changes in product characteristics. Experience in using augers to move powders, flakes or granules is essential. Trantec has that experience.

MATERIAL OF CONSTRUCTION

At Augers UK we understand the importance of variation in auger materials, as applications can have a combination of requirements to meet. That is why we provide a range of applicable materials that can meet strict manufacturing specifications. Our construction materials include 303/304 and 316 stainless steel, UHMWPE (Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene), Brass, Mild steel, and plastic with metal detectable plastic available when required.

  • 303/304/316 stainless steel augers and auger conveyors
  • UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)
  • Brass augers
  • Metal detectable plastic
  • Mild steel
  • Plastic augers

We can advise on each material’s pros & cons to help you understand what auger material is best suited to you. From the corrosion resistance of various steel alloys to the chemical resistance of UHMWPE, Trantec can assist. Below are a few examples.

UHMWPE

  • High resistance to tensile and compressive stress
  • High operational temperatures and good dielectric properties.
  • High resistant to most stripping agents and solvents, including alkalis, acids, organic solvents, degreasing agents, and non-toxic electrolytic attack
  • Robust and non-staining qualities
  • High abrasion and chemical erosion resistance compared to other polymers
  • Self-lubricating with non-stick qualities

303 stainless steel

  • Can withstand corrosion resistance from all atmospheric sources, organic chemicals, dyes and sterilisers
  • Good resistance to oxidation when intermittently exposed to temperatures under 760 degrees C

304 stainless steel

  • 304 Stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel which provides resistance to acidic and caustic solutions
  • Reduced chance of intergranular corrosion
  • Melting point is betwenn 2550 to 2650 degrees fahrenheit, enabling stainless steel 304 to withstand extremely high temperatures

316 stainless steel

  • Greater resistance properties than 304 stainless steel
  • Easier fabrication, cleaning and welding properties
  • Increased resistance to sodium chloride-based substances
  • Durable and easy to clean, therefore the preferred choice for food applications
  • 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum properties, enabling 316 to withstand salt, highly acidic environments an high temperatures
