drilling augers for a scientific project

Previously, we expanded our expertise by supplying specialised drilling augers for a groundbreaking scientific project. In collaboration with two UK universities, we developed a series of custom augers for a drilling rig designed to support their Antarctic exploration project, which aims to drill beneath the ice sheet. The augers, incorporated into the rig, are lowered to depths of approximately 170 meters beneath the ice.

These augers feature a twin-start design, with flights thinned down to just two millimeters to minimise drilling friction. Following machining, each auger undergoes meticulous hand polishing to achieve a smooth, crevice-free surface. Constructed from durable stainless steel 316, the augers are built to endure the harshest conditions, ensuring a significantly longer service life. Feedback from both universities has been overwhelmingly positive, with particular praise for the augers’ exceptional performance in meeting the stringent demands of the Antarctic exploration project.
